One of my favorite resources for found typography is motorcycle club jackets. M.C. jackets if you will. The latest foundfont™ set is based on a jacket I ganked a few years ago as part of researching a project. Looks to be hand lettered chenille embroidery. We liked it, so we made a font out of it. It's currently only a vector set available as a free download below. Hoping to flesh out a full family of these based on other jacket lettering.

Crazy Month

The time has come to prep all of the work for the show. Been framing and trimming and framing and painting/printing. This past month has been crazy, we had a death in the family and I was in LA all of last week for ICON6. Summer is flying by and I'm ready for a little time to breath.

Really excited for the show tomorrow night though, should be a great release and just an overall great event. Should be a great turnout.

Hucklebuck has been contracted to help brand and produce a limited edition screen printed poster for one of the nation's most precious folk art treasures that you have never heard of, The Hartman Rock Garden right here in little old Springfield, Ohio.

" The Hartman Rock Garden was created by Harry "Ben" Hartman from 1932 through 1944. This remarkable garden includes over 250,000 individual stones that combine a mixture of history, religion, and depression-era pop culture."

If you are an artist, craftsman or someone caught up in the storm of our current recession you should definitely check out this place. Hartman lost his job during the great depression and took the bad situation and created something great. In the light of the economic circumstance we find ourselves in this attraction provides an inspiring reminder that we can overcome and create beauty in the face of craziness.

We're super excited to begin on the screenprinted poster, should be great. I'll post when we have art to share.

I was recently in the sunroom of our 103 year old home and noticed a few scraps of paper sticking out of the brass doorway. I pulled a few out and realized that they were clippings from the local newspaper dated February 27, 1939. One can imagine the family that was living here at the time. Dealing with the fall out from the Depression and a potentially colder than normal winter ripping up the newspaper and stuffing it in the frame of the door to prevent drafts of cold air. Some of the comics section is shown as well as a few other abstracted scraps. I thought they were interesting enough the post. Enjoy.

5 Things To the 2009 Design Graduates

I recently put together a few talking points to share with the 2009 graduating class at the school of advertising art. I put these five points together based on my experience while I was in school and over the past 10 years in the field. The 5 things that have stuck with me and I think lead to being a successful designer.

1. Concern yourself with being good, but even more so with being interesting.
There are plenty of design robots out there doing “good” design. The key is to really strive for “interesting” design. Bring something new to the idea, don’t be scared to try new things. It’s the interesting design that creates impact for your clients, it’s good design that falls to the periphery.

2. Always stay away from the expected solution
This ties back to what we just said, be interesting. Designing the expected thing is a sure fire way to just be good. Take the expected and twist it and add to it.

3. Any experience is valuable
You will, no doubt, find yourself at some point in your career working a job that may not line up with your afore mentioned passion. When you find yourself in this place don’t spend your time complaining or writing a-hole comments on facebook with the hopes that your boss will see it and fire you. Instead appreciate your situation for what it is and pull out any nutritional nugget possible that you can keep with you once your tenure with that employer is over. Nothing is waste.

4. Always be aware of who the best is. Not locally the best, the best
You have a responsibility to yourself and your clients to be knowledgeable about who is doing what not only locally, but globally. Don’t strive to be better than the other mid-level local shop, strive to be better than the most decorated agencies in the country/world. Raise your own bar. Doing this is as simple as keeping a membership to CA or Print magazine.

5. Beware the trap that is your pride
Your pride has the capability to make you the best designer and the least employable. There is always someone better than you. As soon as you think you’re great you will be passed by a younger more malleable designer willing to learn. Be confident, but be humble to an extent. Not to take anything away from any of your great work over the past two years, but if you are sitting here with a pride filled chip on your shoulder already-go on brush your shoulder off. There isn’t one of you who has proven yourself as a pro yet, just remember to temper your confidence with a good dosage of reality every now and then.

My work will focus on work I have done for local organizations and tearing them apart to be reassembled out of their original intended purpose. We had just come off of the Express Hang Tag project which Chip had also been comissioned. We met him the night before at the artist reception party and he invited us to drop by. Impending Hucklebuck Font Studio

I am working on a type design co., once the name and branding are done I'll post the site. For now here is my latest type creation. The font studio will focus on the extraction of existing typography from our environment and extending the found characters into a True Type display alphabet. This first sample was extracted from this page that I found in an old model airplane magazine. The characters are a bit familiar, but truly unique and totally vintage.

Westcott Poster Inspiration

The students who developed the plans that will be on display for the exhibit drew inspiration from Friedrich Fröbel, the man who developed many of the learning tools we use now for young children and the inventor of Kindergarten. One of his main learning crafts was to use paper weaving to develop creativity and problem solving. Here are a few of the images I pulled for reference. These lead me into the idea of representing paper waeving with the title typography for the event. As shown below. The architectural elements relate to the development plans done by the students.
